Der Scharlatan - Il Ciarlatano
|
A cheerful baroque masterpiece
When the famous Italian opera composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi premiered his opera "Adriano in Siria" on 25 October 1734 at the Teatro San Bartolomeo in Naples, the serious piece was a real failure. However, the composer had written - as it was usually done those days - another little funny opera for the pauses of the performance: an intermezzo - literally in between the pieces! And it became a triumph. All the world talked only of "The crafty peasant woman" (or "La contadina astuta", as the piece is called in the Italian original), and no one was talking about the big opera seria anymore. Many opera companies traveled with this masterpiece across Europe, always getting new titles: finally we present "Il Ciarlatano", in English "The charlatan". No wonder, because with the "charlatan" Pergolesi did something very special: no more heroes on stage, all the figures from the ancient legends and world history replaced by the simple people. Those characters did exist before, but as embarrassing or rough figures that were made fun of. That is quite different in this "charlatan". Livietta, the girl from the country side, who now plays the lead role, is not only very sympathetic, but also very clever. She manages to capture the cunning rogue Tracollo. The fact that both finally fall in love and find each other is the last glorious point of the little opera. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi has succeeded to direct the attention to ordinary people combining them with high art. It's about fun, irony and entertainment. This production features many elements of street theater and the Commedia dell'Arte, we bring baroque opera very close to today's audience and let us, like our spectators, be infected by the vitality and the magic of the music. We intend to bring Pergolesi's masterpiece to places for connoisseurs but also to audiences that might never have seen an opera before to show them the beauty and joy as well as the fun side of art. |
